Crystal Greene

Crystal Greene

Crystal Greene has been with LIU since April of 2002, and started up LIU’s Directors & Officers operation in Atlanta. She majored in risk management, and has worked in the insurance industry since 1994.

Why specialty insurance?
“Before graduation I researched all my options—from working in a company’s risk management department to writing standard or specialty lines. I found D&O products the most appealing, and I liked the combination of marketing to brokers and analyzing the financials and business plans of clients.”

Why LIU?
“I started hearing about LIU, and competing with them for quotes, when I worked for another specialty carrier.  I thought, ‘these guys are doing something right.’ Once I came on board, I saw that we had the right perspective and entrepreneurial strength to succeed.”

The LIU difference?
“We’re all given the opportunity to play a role in directing strategy. And because I have that input, I feel ownership of the strategy. I want to make it and LIU successful.”

Career growth?
“LIU offers plenty of opportunities to move up and grow. You have access to great resources that extend through the entire company, and a great team that wants to see you succeed.”

Reed Henderson

Reed Henderson

After three years in LIU’s San Francisco office, Reed Henderson received the opportunity to open a Management Liability office in Los Angeles. He has specialized in management liability coverage for more than seven years, and has spent several of those years working in the brokerage side of the business.

Why LIU?
“Right from the start, I saw LIU as a place to grow. As the company expands, so do the opportunities. If you can prove yourself, you will get a chance.”

The LIU Difference?
“Having worked on the brokerage side, I knew the company really well. I interacted with several LIU underwriters, and it was easy to tell they were happy and enjoyed their jobs. Plus, I respected their approach to business. LIU will write good, profitable business with fair terms.”

The day-to-day?
“I’m building the Los Angeles management liability presence, which requires a lot of marketing, a lot of meetings. It’s certainly not a 9 to 5 desk job right now. I’m out traveling the territory and connecting with brokers and clients face to face, letting them know about our new office and the products we can provide for them.”

Growth and opportunities?
“LIU runs a lean organization, which means access to senior management and the ability to put forth your ideas.  If you come to the table with a solution, it will be heard.”

Alton Moore

Alton Moore

After rotating through various insurance company departments as a college intern, Alton Moore found Directors & Officers insurance to be the most interesting. Following graduation in 1999, he worked for one specialty carrier for four years before joining LIU in 2003.

The job?
“I love it. The people, the work, the job. In D&O you get a very close look at a company’s business and access to their top executives. We write a variety of innovative companies from technology firms to pharmaceuticals. You really understand what their business is all about. It’s practically a new education every day.”

Why LIU?
“There’s a spirit of camaraderie and a lot of support. Furthermore, we know who we are, what we want to do, and how to get there.”

Career opportunities?
“You’re expected to understand the business, contribute as much as possible, and pull your own weight. We operate without a lot of layers, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to be heard. If you want to learn and contribute, no one will stop you.”

CJ Johnson

CJ Johnson

C.J. Johnson joined LIU in February 2007 to start up and head the general liability operation in Los Angeles. A 28-year veteran of the insurance industry, she has firmly established herself with the broker community and is experienced in placing coverage for product manufacturers, habitational risks and contractors.

Why LIU?
“We have a talented, knowledgeable and supportive management team. They give me the flexibility and authority to meet the needs of brokers and their clients, while making us a stronger company.”

A top business priority?
“It’s a relationship business. We get to know the brokers well, and we respond to their submissions promptly. Even if they don’t like a specific answer, they’ll come back because they appreciate the service.”

Excitement?
“You’re going to be challenged in specialty lines. We have underwriting guidelines, but they don’t make the decision for you. You have to do your research and trust your intuition.”

Teamwork?
“We empower people to bring out their best effort and ideas. We sink or swim together. No one job is more important than another—we all have to produce.”

Tania Marcial

Tania Marcial

Tania Marcial is a Technical Assistant in Miami—the branch office for LIU’s Latin American operation. A native of Puerto Rico, Tania helps bridge the U.S. and Latin American cultures.

Your best moments at LIU?
“I really enjoy the fast-paced environment—especially when we have an urgent request that we need to complete. There’s such a sense of satisfaction when it’s done well and on time.”

Would you recommend LIU to others?
“I already have! A former colleague was looking for a change and I suggested LIU. It turned out to be a good fit for her as well.”

The global perspective?
“I’m working in the U.S., yet connecting with LIU clients throughout Latin America. Also, the office itself is very diverse—with people from, or at least having lived, in several foreign countries.”

Your day-to-day?
“Most people think of car or homeowners when they hear insurance—but there are so many lines that they are not aware of, and Casualty Excess and Umbrella is one of them. Every time I research an account, I get a new education.”

Patrice Williams

Patrice Williams

As an Umbrella Claims Officer in LIU’s New York office, Patrice Williams sees a diverse assortment of claims. Using her experience, creativity and problem-solving skills she resolves claims to a fair resolution.

The skills to succeed?
“Umbrella claims are traumatic for the claimant and the client. I must be logical, organized and clear to resolve the claim quickly and fairly.”

Why claims?
“An incident resulting in an Umbrella claim could get national attention. But from my perspective, I’m helping to resolve the situation and make things easier for all parties. I feel like I’ve contributed to something greater than myself.”

Why LIU?
“The people I work with are terrific; they keep me coming back each morning. The day would be a lot harder without them.”

Melissa DiMonte

Melissa DiMonte

Melissa DiMonte has worked at LIU Environmental since its inception. She currently underwrites for its Environmental business out of the Boston office.

Why LIU?
“When I started at LIU it was a start-up. I found it interesting and challenging to be in such a fast-paced operation. We have grown by leaps and bounds, yet that entrepreneurial spirit and independence remain.”

Why Environmental?
“Environmental coverage is not a “one size fits all” line of business. You need the flexibility to tailor coverage for each individual insured. Learning the many nuances of each product can be challenging, but that is also what makes this line interesting.”

The rewards of Underwriting?
“You’re using your mind, there’s a lot of analysis. But that’s only part of it. You’re also out there building relationships and telling the LIU story. No two days are ever the same.”

The LIU difference?
“We monitor the industry and market cycles, and set goals accordingly. We’re not going to grow for growth’s sake. We make smart underwriting decisions and have realistic expectations.”

Laura Marino

Laura Marino

Starting with LIU in 2006 as a Technical Assistant, Laura Marino was recently promoted to Associate Underwriter. It’s a career progression she has always worked toward, and finally achieved at LIU.

Why LIU?
“From my first interview I felt very comfortable here. It’s such a great atmosphere to work in. Everyone is very friendly and helpful.”

Describe your day-to-day?
“I’m guided, but still have a lot of independence. It’s up to me to get my work done and do it well. I could be booking and issuing policies, creating loss runs or training new employees.”

What has helped you succeed at LIU?
“I had the personal drive to volunteer for projects and take additional insurance classes. My managers and peers matched that enthusiasm with on-the-job mentoring and support. I sat in on telephone meetings and went out on sales calls. The first-hand experience was a great addition to the outside classes, which the company reimbursed.”

What advice would you give others looking to succeed at LIU?
“Do as much as you can, because your efforts will always be rewarded.”

Humberto Pozo

Humberto Pozo

Humberto Pozo began his career as an attorney, and while exploring new options, he found that, with his legal background, Casualty underwriting was a great fit. Working out of the Miami office, he interacts with brokers across Latin America to build business opportunities.

Your take on underwriting?
“It’s not just about analysis and premium charges. It’s a person-to-person business. If you’re honest and trustworthy, your clients will respond to that. And as an underwriter for Latin American clients, I have to know the risks, exposures and trends for each country.”

The LIU difference?
“You’re given a unique opportunity here—as the creator, not a follower. You’re given the overall direction of the business to develop, and then it is up to you to execute on that goal.”

Travel opportunities?
“The nature of my position affords many travel opportunities. Each trip brings me to a new key contact, and possibly a different country.”
